Spacebox: a new type of modular housing
all areas.
Spacebox is a revolutionary new type of modular housing, made of high-grade composite materials designed by Mart de Jong of design office De Vijf in Rotterdam and currently installed at a number of locations in the Netherlands.
Low cost modular construction
Spacebox is a high specification low-cost, studio-housing unit that can be installed and moved quickly. Spacebox units are delivered to the site, fully fitted and ready to be stacked on top of each other and secured. Studio units come in 18m2, 24m2 and 28m2 sizes and can be inter-linked to create one-a bedroom apartment with separate living quarters or larger units. Spaceboxes can be erected in rows of any length two units deep and up to four units high.
Site preparation is faster than traditional multi-occupant buildings. Each studio contains a fully specified kitchen, shower-room cum WC. Water, electricity, sewerage and telephone connections are fully integrated at the manufacturing stage.
Spaceboxes have been installed at a number of locations in the Netherlands
since 2001. Further installations are now planned in Europe, the UK and
the USA.
Existing and planned installations include student
accommodation, hotels,
key-worker housing, self-catering accommodation,
emergency housing and military quarters. Other options include low
cost beach homes and seaside homes.
